Our Clutch Services Include

  • Clutch Replacement – We fit new clutch kits with the plate, pressure plate and release bearing.
  • Flywheel Machining – A worn flywheel causes juddering. We machine flywheels smooth again.
  • Flywheel Replacement – Badly worn flywheels need replacing. We fit new ones when machining won’t fix it.
  • Clutch Cable Replacement – Cable clutches wear and stretch over time. A worn cable makes the clutch pedal feel heavy or spongy.
  • Hydraulic Clutch Repairs – We repair and replace hydraulic clutch master cylinders, slave cylinders and hoses when they leak or fail.
  • Clutch Adjustment – Some clutches can be adjusted to improve pedal feel and engagement. We check and adjust where possible.

Signs Your Clutch Needs Replacing

Clutches wear gradually, so you might not notice the problem until it’s bad. Watch for these warning signs:

  • The clutch is slipping. Engine revs climb but the car doesn’t accelerate properly, especially going uphill or under load.
  • Difficulty changing gears. The clutch isn’t disengaging fully, making it hard to get into gear.
  • The clutch pedal feels different. Might be heavy, spongy, sticking to the floor, or the biting point has changed.
  • Juddering when you let the clutch out. The car shakes or vibrates when pulling away.
  • Burning smell. A slipping clutch gets hot and smells like burning.
  • The clutch grabs suddenly. Instead of engaging smoothly, it grabs and makes the car jerk.
  • Noises when you press the clutch pedal. Squealing, grinding or rattling means the release bearing or other components are worn.

Why Choose AutoCare for Clutch Work?

Clutch replacement is a big job. We’ve done plenty of them and know how to do it properly.

We use decent clutch kits. Budget clutches don’t last. We fit kits that’ll give you good service life.

While we’ve got the gearbox out, we check everything else. The release bearing, flywheel, clutch fork and hydraulics all get inspected. If something else needs attention, we’ll let you know.

How Long Does a Clutch Last?

Clutch life depends on how you drive and what you drive. City driving with lots of stop-start wears clutches faster. Towing and heavy loads also shorten clutch life.

Most clutches last between 80,000 and 150,000 kilometres. Some last longer, some wear out sooner. How you use the clutch makes a big difference.

Riding the clutch, resting your foot on the pedal, and slipping the clutch excessively all wear it out faster.

Clutch Care Tips

Make your clutch last longer:

  • Don’t ride the clutch. Take your foot off the pedal when you’re not changing gears.
  • Don’t rest your hand on the gear stick. This puts pressure on the selector fork and wears components.
  • Avoid holding the car on the clutch on hills. Use the handbrake instead.
  • Don’t slip the clutch to control speed. Use the brakes.
  • Change gears smoothly. Aggressive clutch use wears it faster.
