WOF – Warrant of Fitness
Ensure Your Vehicle is Safe and Legal
Your WOF checks that your vehicle meets safety standards and is legal to drive. If your car fails, you can’t drive it until the problems are fixed.
We do WOF inspections and can fix most failed items on the spot. Get your WOF done here and we’ll make sure your car passes.
Our WOF Services Include
- WOF Inspection – We inspect your vehicle against the official WOF checklist. Takes about 30 minutes for most vehicles.
- Pre-WOF Check – Not sure if your car will pass? We can do a pre-WOF check and let you know what needs fixing before the official inspection.
- Failed Item Repairs – If your car fails its WOF, we can fix most problems straight away. Brakes, lights, tyres, exhaust, we’ll sort it.
- Re-inspection – Once we’ve fixed the failed items, we re-inspect your vehicle to issue the WOF.
What We Check During a WOF
A WOF inspection covers all the safety-critical parts of your vehicle:
Brakes – We test braking performance and check pads, discs, lines and the handbrake.
Tyres – Tread depth must be at least 1.5mm across the whole tyre. We check for damage and uneven wear.
Lights – All lights must work properly. Headlights, indicators, brake lights, reversing lights and number plate lights.
Windscreen and Wipers – No cracks in your line of sight. Wipers must clear the screen properly.
Steering and Suspension – We check for excessive play, worn components and damage.
Seatbelts – All seatbelts must work and be undamaged.
Body and Chassis – We check for rust, damage and sharp edges that could cause injury.
Exhaust and Emissions – The exhaust must be secure, not too loud, and emissions must be within limits.
Wheels and Wheel Bearings – Wheels must be secure and bearings must not have excessive play.
Glazing – Windows must be in good condition with no major cracks or damage.
Common WOF Failures
The most common reasons vehicles fail their WOF:
- Worn tyres below minimum tread depth.
- Brake pads worn out or braking performance below standard.
- Lights not working. Blown bulbs or faulty wiring.
- Cracked or damaged windscreen in the driver’s line of sight.
- Exhaust leaks or excessive noise.
- Worn suspension or steering components.
- Rusty or damaged body panels with sharp edges.
Why Choose AutoCare for Your WOF?
We’re thorough but fair. We check everything properly but we’re not looking to fail you on minor things.
If your car fails, we can usually fix it straight away. Most WOF failures can be sorted while you wait or the same day.
We’ll explain what failed and why. Some things need fixing immediately. Some things you can monitor and sort later if they’re not safety-critical.
WOF Frequency
How often you need a WOF depends on your vehicle:
New vehicles – First WOF at three years old, then annually.
Vehicles over three years old – Annual WOF for most light vehicles.
Older vehicles – Some older vehicles need a six-monthly WOF. Check your current WOF label.
Heavy vehicles – Different rules apply. We can advise on your specific vehicle.
